update on mom

Hey everyone! Just wanted to fill you in an thank everyone for their prayers for mom.

On Wednesday she started a new medication Zofanex in her nebulizer. That evening she broke out in whelps all over. So she calls the MD and they said to D/C that one. So Thursday afternoon she took her antibiotic Biaxin. Apparently she is allergic to biaxin and not the zofanex. Well her airway started closing up and she broke out again. Mom called me and I got a few things taken care of in JC and headed home as soon as I could. I got to the hospital and she had been given IV epi. That took care of it initially, but the reaction came back late yesterday afternoon and they gave her IV benadryl. I wasn't @ the hospital or I would have said ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!! Her veins are not exactly patent and I knew she would blow the IV and benadryl is bad for the underlying tissue. By the time I got back to the hospital, the IV had blown and she has this nice bruise where it was. So they put her on PO benadryl and were going to send her home this AM.
(Saturday)

AM blood draws came and her potassium level was 2.2 VERY BAD! Normal is 3.5-5. So they started her on IV K+. Well I get there around 11 this am. The IV is supposed to be hung piggyback (one bag above the other) with normal saline and ran in really slow. The potassium was hanging with sodium chloride which is ok, but they were running it in fast and the potassium bag was lower... not ok. I fixed it... all was good. The nurse had to come change the flow rate and slow it down... i was not a happy camper. It should have never been run that fast in the first place. So anyway... she is on her 4th and final bag of potassium right now, they are going to draw her blood again and hopefully if everything is normal, she will get to come home tomorrow.

Again thanks everyone for your calls and prayers!!

and I always wonder how people that don't have any medical background don't get "killed" in the hospitals.., you know...??
Glad she is doing better...
